TopChip - Born From Demand

TopChip is a fun, point scoring game played in a high quality environment which can be enjoyed by all members of the family. The game is played from high-tech driving bays with real golf clubs and premium golf balls. Players aim to score points by chipping the golf balls into targets set in a 25 metre outfield.

TopChip uses the revolutionary I.D. Ball System invented by World Golf Systems to identify each player and the golf balls they hit and to record the points scored. The player's results are displayed on a monitor in each bay and also on a leader board creating a fun and competitive atmosphere.

TopChip has attracted the attention of major businesses including Volvo, who asked if a scaled down version of TopGolf could be created as a promotional attraction. TopChip was developed from this demand and has been refined, creating a new attraction that can complement any retail or leisure environment.

TopChip is quick and easy to play, for individuals or in teams. Each game comprises:

  • Low cost fee, per person per game
  • Ten I.D.Balls
  • Free club hire
  • 4 minute slots per player
  • Free game score printout
  • Free entry onto leaderboard
  • Daily/weekly/monthly and event sponsored prizes

The rules for playing and scoring in TopChip are very straightforward:

  • A game consists of 10 balls.
  • The object of the game is to hit each of the targets numbered 1 to 9 and
    then the hole-in-one.
  • The player with the highest score will be deemed the winner.
    The maximum score is 250.
  • Targets 1 to 9 can be hit in any order (although a BONUS score will be awarded if they are hit in the correct order).
  • Each target should be hit once.
  • The centre zone of each target scores double (e.g. hole 8 scores
    16 points for the centre zone).
  • Once a target has been hit, no points will be awarded if it is hit again.
  • After each scoring shot the next ball will count double.
  • Points will be deducted if your ball goes into a hazard.
  • The hole-in-one counts only for the 10th ball and is worth 50 points.

The TopChip Experience

In April 2003 Volvo Cars UK, approached World Golf Systems withBroadgate arena 2003 a request for the company to create a concept called 'Urban Golf Challenge'. TopChip was born out of this partnership with the creation of a compact version of TopGolf with a small outfield and five targets using the same I.D.Ball System technology, and of course real golf clubs and real golf balls! Volvo's 16 year association with professional golf has been one of the most successful commercial partnerships in sporting history. Supporting tournaments such as the Volvo PGA Championship and the Volvo Masters Andalusia has provided huge international media coverage and a sharp commercial focus. Implementing TopChip for their Urban Golf Challenge enabled Volvo to extend their established association with golf by providing those with a passive interest in the sport and those who had never played, the Wentworth 2003opportunity to pick up a club and have a go.

The Broadgate Arena, in the City of London was the venue for the first Volvo Urban Golf Challenge, which ran for 5 days in June 2003. Over 4000 of the City's frustrated golfers entered to compete for prizes supplied by Volvo, TopGolf, Ping and Galvin Green. With PGA professionals on hand to provide tuition, many who had never played before were also eager to play the game. The response was so overwhelming that Volvo commissioned WGS to provide a mobile version of the game for use at the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth in May 2004. An inflatable structure was used to house the outfield and four bays.
